Green discount for green vessels

Creation date: 20 January 2020

As the first port in Denmark, Port of Aarhus has decided to give a discount to green vessels.

This scheme is an attempt where Port of Aarhus incentivizes shipping lines calling at our port to become more sustainable. Thus, as of January 1, Port of Aarhus will give a discount to vessels with an ESI (Environmental Ship Index) score of minimum 30 points. In this context, the vessels are awarded points relative to their emissions of CO2, SOx, NOx as well as their potential for accepting power from shore.

The decision to give a discount is part of the sustainable strategy of Port of Aarhus and, starting from January 1, the discount rate will be 4.5% of the ships' dues.

Chief Commercial Officer Nicolai Krøyer says that according to the Danish Ports Act (Havneloven), Port of Aarhus must receive all vessels wanting to call at the port. Thus, Port of Aarhus has very little influence on which vessels call and on their use of fuel.

” This is why we try to incentivize the vessels with a financial instrument promoting sustainability. Of course, we hope that all shipping lines already using Port of Aarhus will respond positively to this opportunity to save money on the ships' dues,” Nicolai Krøyer explains.

He also hopes that the discount will make Port of Aarhus attractive to shipping lines that are not currently using Port of Aarhus.

” Of course, we are very excited to see if being a first mover in terms of sustainable ships' dues will have any commercial consequences. Based on this, we hope that we will attract new customers who already have a sustainable profile and therefore can see the advantage of calling at our port at a lower price,” Nicolai Krøyer says.
