Increasing Turnover in most Business Areas

Creation date: 19 April 2016

445,000 containers, 1,000,000 tons of oil and 1,000,000 cars were carried to or from Port of Aarhus last year.

The above examples are just some of the activities that have contributed to the four per cent increase in turnover for Port of Aarhus in 2015, resulting in a net turnover of DKK 246 million. The increase was achieved from shipping dues, wharfage and lease of area, whereas services were status quo compared to the year before.

The overall result for 2015 is significantly higher (81 per cent) than in 2014. This is partly owing to an extraordinary profit of DKK 48 million, resulting from the sale of assets, which thus contributes considerably to the total realized profit of DKK 84 million.

Port of Aarhus has reason to be optimistic when looking at the individual business areas. The number of containers lifted across the quay increased by no less than five per cent, compared to Port of Hamburg where they had a decrease of approx. 13 per cent during the same period. Being the biggest container port in Denmark, Port of Aarhus had a significant market share of approx. 60 per cent.

“With an increase of five per cent we have captured further market shares in Denmark, but also compared to Port of Hamburg. I am pleased with this result, especially when bearing in mind that growth is powered by exports,” says CEO Jakob F. Christensen.

In spite of the bankruptcy of OW Bunkers in 2014, Port of Aarhus also succeeded in making a small profit on bulk business, comprising agriculture, building materials, reuse and energy. A new operator was able to catch up with the loss of the first months – one of the reasons being that a number of container owners have now chosen Aarhus as a port of bunkering.

The biggest increase is a plus of 14 per cent in the number of cars transported by ferry between Aarhus and Odden on Zealand. This also means that for the first time ever more than one million cars were transported on that particular route.

The total turnover of goods increased by two per cent, which is twice as much as the increase realized in all Danish ports, for which the turnover of goods increased by one per cent in the same period.

CEO Jakob F. Christensen is satisfied with the result of the year and calls it “as expected”.
