Bulk Terminal

Bulk cargo in the Eastern Harbour

The Bulk Terminal in the Eastern Harbour has ideal facilities and provide a unique opportunity for the transshipment of goods between larger and smaller ships, between ship and warehouse, between ship and railway or lorries vai the efficient conveyor belt systems.

Two new portal cranes - Kiro Ardelt kangaroo cranes - have been delivered in July 2010. They replaced two older bulk cranes at quay nos. 316 og 318, which have been in  operation for more than 30 years.

The terminal is called at by ships coming direct from overseas markets with cargos of up to 60,000 tonnes, such as feedstuffs for the agricultural cooperatives DLG .

The Eastern harbour has a water depth of 13,5 metres and it can therefore accommodate ships with a deep draugt. As many as five ships of Panamax clas can be loaded or unloaded at the same time.

Bulk cargo at the grain pier

This part of the port is used by the farm supply companies Himmerlands Grovvarer and DLG (Danish Cooperative Farm Supply) for feedstuff production and as a collection warehouse for manufactured products. At the harbour area, Mellemarmen, grain, feedstuff ingredients and fertilizer are unloaded from ships to the feedstuff companies' silos by a mobile crane.

Port of Aarhus's mobile crane is used mainly for unloading of feedstuffs and other types of bulk cargo at the Grain Pier. The crane is a mobile materiel handling machine produced at crane factory Sennebogen in Germany. The crane is hydraulic and especially suitable for loading and unloading bulk cargo from smaller coasters to lorries. It is working very fast and it is able to move the same amount of tonnes per hour as the quay crane no. 11 at the Grain Pier, which was moved to The Multiterminal.

The mobile crane’s grab can contain up to 3 cubic metres bulk cargo and can lift up to 15 tonnes with hook. In order to improve the possibilities for the new mobile crane it has been equipped with a lifting platform of approx. 1.5 m, so that it also could load and unload ships with a higher railing.

The mobile crane can easily be moved around in the harbour as it is able to drive with a speed of 20 km an hour.
